Zena Algae Peel

Spicules are tiny, needle-like structures that form the skeletal structure of certain algae and freshwater sponges. The algae spicules are incorporated into the peel solution that is applied to the skin. When massaged in, these spicules penetrate the skin, creating micro-channels that stimulate the skin's natural healing response.

The Zena Algae Peel is not recommended for individuals with shellfish or iodine allergies, open wounds, active skin infections, or inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea, or dermatitis. It should also be avoided if you’ve had recent injectable treatments within the past 3 weeks, or chemical peels or microneedling within the last 4–6 weeks. Candidates must be able to avoid sun exposure for at least one week and commit to daily SPF use. Additionally, retinoids or strong acids must be discontinued at least 2–3 weeks prior to treatment.

Downtime with the Zena Algae Peel is generally minimal, but this is dependent on the depth of treatment. You will notice some visible skin reactions, which are expected as part of the renewal process. Immediately after treatment, you may experience redness, a tight or warm sensation, and a prickly feeling that can last for 24–48 hours.

Over the following 3 to 10 days (depending on the depth), flaking or peeling is common as dead skin cells shed, and new skin is revealed. Some clients may also notice temporary dryness or a sandpaper-like texture during this period. This will be discussed during the consultation.

As the microalgae spicules are massaged into the skin, you may feel a tingling, prickly, or "needling" sensation, similar to a mechanical exfoliation. This feeling can last for several hours to a couple of days, depending on your skin’s sensitivity.

After the treatment, the skin may feel tight, warm, or slightly flushed, and light flaking or peeling can occur as the skin begins to renew. Most clients find the treatment tolerable and well worth the results, especially with proper aftercare.

To ensure optimal healing and results, it’s important to avoid sun exposure, heat, sweating, active skincare ingredients, and makeup for several days post-treatment. Some people can return to regular activities within 72 hours after treatment; however, it is important to remember that everyone’s response will be different. Many clients have significant and visible peeling and are more comfortable with limiting work and social engagements for the week following treatment. Visible improvement in skin texture and tone will begin to develop 7 – 10 days following the peel. An aftercare sheet will be provided to you during your consultation.
